Yoga is derived from
a Sanskrit word “yuj” which has
several meanings like, "to control",
"to yoke", "to unite".
General meanings include "combining"
or "uniting", and related ideas
such as "union" and "conjunction".

According to Patanjali's
(A Contributor to Yoga) Eight Limbs of yoga
practice are:
(1) Yama (abstentions):
lying, theft, violence, sex and possessions
(3) Asana: meaning "seat", and in
Patanjali's Sutras it refers to several sitting
positions (Postures) used for meditation.
(2) Niyama (The five "observances"):
purity, study, contentment, austerities, and
surrender to god
(4) Pranayama (Life Force Control): Control
of breath, life force, or soul
(5) Pratyahara (Abstraction): Reversal of
sensual organs
(6) Dharana (Concentration): Keeping a keen
attention on a single object
(7) Dhyana (Meditation): Intense though regarding
to true nature of reality
(8) Samadhi (Liberation): Super-conscious
state of enlightenment
In Hinduism, with its
several views and sects, Self-Realization
and God-Realization are sometimes used interchangeably,
with the belief that the true nature of self
(truth, consciousness, and bliss), revealed
through the practice of yoga, has the same
nature as the universal self.
